Dentinal sensitivity:

The inner dentin layer of the tooth is made up of many microtubules which lead to the nerves in the pulp chamber. When the outer protective cementum and enamel layer of the tooth are removed, the dentin layer is exposed. Cold and hot temperature or pressure can be carried by the microtubules and be sensed by the inner nerve branches of the tooth.

Causes of dentinal sensitivity:

• Aggressive toothbrushing, which wears away the enamel layer
• Poor oral hygiene, allowing tartar to build up at the gum line
• Long time wear of the teeth
• Untreated cavities
• An old restorative filling that has a crack or leak
• Receding gums that expose the root of the tooth
• Gum surgery resulting in exposure of the root of the tooth
• Tooth whitening in people who have root exposure
• Frequently consumption of acidic foods and drinks

Pulpal sensitivity

• Is a reaction of the pulp in the tooth
• tends to only affect a single tooth
• may be caused by decay or infection in the tooth
• may result from recent fillings being placed
• may result from a cracked or broken tooth
• may be due to excessive pressure from grinding and clenching
