Receding Gums

General Facts:

  • characterized as loss of gum tissue at the gum line and exposure of the root of the tooth
  • tooth appears longer than normal
  • tooth may feel notched at the gum line
  • is usually a common problem in adults over the age of 40, but can occur in teenagers
  • may result in sensitive teeth
  • may be a result of gingivitis and/or periodontitis

Causes:

  • Aggressive toothbrushing
  • Abnormal tooth position and crowding
  • Genetics - hereditary thin, fragile or insufficient gingival tissue
  • Gum disease - gingivitis and periodontitis
  • Teeth grinding
  • Adult orthodontic treatment
  • Piercings in the lip or tongue that rub against the gums
  • Eating disorders - from self-induced vomiting
